I hear the sound of my heart thumping, almost as if it could burst out of my chest at any second, as I dash through the deadly Forest of Nightmares, running for my life. I can hear the galloping of horses just behind me, and I begin sprinting toward the river, only a few metres away. I jump into the river and start swimming, but my wedding gown pulls me down beneath the water. I quickly climb out and try to run again, but the heavy gown keeps me from moving fast enough. I pull the crown from my head, find a sharp edge on it, and rip my gown to the length of my knees. Then I start running again, hearing muffled voices behind me.

“Commander, the girl is running away. We need to find her before we lose track of her.”

On hearing that, I quickly changed directions to lose the soldiers.

I was the bride of the King of Inver; a kingdom built on lies and betrayal. I grew up with my father, who cherished me deeply and taught me sword fighting, as he was a retired commander-in-chief of the royal military. We lived a decent life, and one day, seven years ago, my father left for some important work but never returned. Everyone else believed he was dead, and I thought so too. But that is the thing about hope; it shines even in the darkest times.

Suddenly, my head slams into the trunk of a tree. My vision starts turning black, and I fall to the ground with a mocking thump of defeat.

“Your Majesty, the girl... the girl is there, fallen on the ground!” I hear the rushed voice of Jackson, one of the rookie soldiers, constantly trying to impress his older brother, the new King of Inver, Eric - the man I once believed to be a responsible and kind prince, but who had turned out to be a backstabbing liar.

After that, the only thing I remember is Eric’s victorious laughter mocking me cruelly.

I open my eyes to the cold metal of cuffs around my hands and feet. I am alone in a highly secured royal prison chamber. Soon, I hear the quick footsteps of a group of people rushing toward my cell. A group of rough and stern-looking soldiers approaches me and begins pulling me by my hair. A yelp of pain escapes my throat.

So, this is how I was fated to die.

A cold object strikes my head, and my vision fades to black once more.

“Let me tell you a very interesting story, Marion. A long time ago, there was a queen who was very beautiful, but not a particularly good ruler. She was proud of her beauty, and her obsession with it drove her to madness. As she grew older, her beauty slowly faded, and she began using black magic to stay young forever.

“One day, the witch helping the queen accidentally mixed the wrong potions together, causing the queen to lose her radiance completely. The queen, devastated and enraged, insulted the witch for her lack of knowledge. Furious, the witch cursed her, declaring that she would forever remain a demon.”

I hear the deep and comforting voice of my father.

“The queen got what she deserved, but what happened to her after that, Dad?” I hear my younger self ask, bright and cheerful.

“Good question, Marion. After that, the queen became devastated and began destroying the entire kingdom. Eventually, she was imprisoned in a dark cave at the very edge of the kingdom.

“It is said that every ten years, the most beautiful girl in the kingdom marries the King of Inver and mysteriously disappears on the very night of the wedding. Some say the girl is taken to the queen so she can use magic to regain her radiance, while others simply call it the First Bride’s Curse; the belief that the first bride of every king can never rule the kingdom.”

My eyes suddenly fly open, and I see Eric and his mother performing some kind of ritual while I hear the voice of Eric’s father.

“It would have been so much easier if she hadn’t known the story of the queen. People are shocked that she is still alive, even though she is the first bride. We need to hurry before anyone spots her.”

Terror grips me. My heart pounds violently, and I struggle to breathe before darkness overtakes me once again.

I open my eyes and suddenly find myself being pushed off the edge of a cave. I scream at the top of my lungs, but no answer comes to my desperate cries for help.

I hit my head against a chunk of rock, making my vision blurry, but I can still clearly see the Demon Queen before me. She looks terrifyingly old and unnatural, yet I notice a faint glimmer of sorrow in her eyes, though perhaps it is vengeance mistaken for sorrow.

She reaches toward me, but I sprint to the other end of the cave. The Demon Queen is enormous, so I squeeze into a small hole to hide myself. Suddenly, heat burns at my feet. I look down to see the queen breathing flames into the tunnel. I quickly crawl into another opening, going deeper into the cave in hopes of escaping a miserable death.

My eyes fall upon engraved writing on the cave walls, the names of the brides who had suffered the same fate decades before me.

Then I hear a deep voice that sounds strangely familiar. I try to ignore it, convincing myself I am hallucinating, and continue searching for a way out. Thoughts race through my mind. Had anyone escaped this cave before? Or had they simply never returned for fear of being thrown back inside?

I hear the voice again. Though I fight the urge to follow it, my curiosity wins. I walk toward the sound and discover an old man, still in excellent shape, sitting on the ground and rubbing two stones together to start a fire.

“Who are you?” I ask the silhouette before me.

“Marion? Is that you?”

The familiarity of the voice sends chills down my spine.

“Who are you, and how do you know my name?” I ask hurriedly, though deep down I already know the answer.

“Oh, my Marion, have you forgotten me? I am your father. I missed you so much.”

At his words, every hair on my body stands on end. I knew that voice too well to ever forget it. Shock crashes over me so hard that I think I might collapse.

“H-how is this possible? You died seven years ago,” I whisper, barely holding myself together before finally breaking down into tears.

“I am so sorry, Marion. I should never have gone there,” my father replies, tears streaming down his face.

“I deserve to know what happened,” I say sternly, wiping my tears away.

“I had been investigating the tale of the Demon Queen and the First Bride’s Curse for more than ten years. Eventually, I discovered that the Demon Queen only wished to die peacefully. However, the royal family learned that whenever the queen killed a bride while trying to regain her beauty, she cried tears that turned into giant pearls. Because of greed, they refused to let her die.

“When I gathered evidence against the royals, they threw me into this cave. They kept me alive only to care for the queen after she stopped eating the food they brought her. I have been trapped here for seven years. During that time, I learned the truth.

“The queen never cared about beauty. Her husband forced her to remain beautiful. In fact, it was the king himself who arranged for the curse to be placed upon her so no one would suspect him.

“The queen can only die when the king is killed by his first bride, and that bride is you.”

“So... I have to kill Eric?”

“No. Not the current king. The husband of the Demon Queen.”

He slowly rises to his feet.

“And I am that king.”

“What?” I stare at him in horror. “Dad... what are you talking about? You’re not the king... are you?”

“What did you think, Marion? That your father was foolish enough to walk into danger carrying evidence against my own bloodline? Eric called me here because of my sharp mind and strong body.

“I wanted to remain king for eternity... and I will. Now I will kill you and rule Inver forever.”

Suddenly, I hear heavy footsteps behind me. The queen appears.

“I mean you no harm,” she says quickly. “This is only an illusion, Marion. He manipulates the brides by taking the form of the person they love most, so they will not have the strength to fight him.

“He has never managed to kill any of them because I kill them first. That is why I have always been forced to kill the brides. If I do not, he will regain his power, and the kingdom will once again drown in blood and vengeance.

“The others were too frightened to reach him, but you were clever enough to find him. I believe you can defeat him.”

“I will try my best,” I reply, though fear still grips me.

I lunge toward him, forcing myself to ignore the fact that he wears my father’s face. The queen notices my hesitation and hands me a stone carved into the shape of a sword. The false king unsheathes his own blade.

We charge at each other. He does not realize how familiar I am with my father’s fighting style, and I use that against him. My father had always been exceptional at attacking but weak at defending. I, however, was the opposite.

I continuously strike at him, wearing him down little by little. Finally, when exhaustion slows him, I drive the stone sword into his chest. The blade pierces straight through his heart.

As I stare at the body of my father lying lifeless on the ground, I begin to weep uncontrollably. Then, suddenly, the scar on his chest vanishes.

“You defeated me, Marion,” my father says softly. “I am so proud of you.”

I collapse into his arms, crying harder than ever before.

“I think we should finally give the queen some peace and leave this place,” my father says gently.

“Yes... but before that...”

I walk toward the queen and embrace her tightly.

“I will make sure the people remember you the way you truly deserve. Goodbye. I hope you finally find peace in heaven.”

I wave farewell to the queen.

My father and I escape the cave and immediately reveal the truth to the people of Inver. We expose the terrible crimes committed by the royal family and present proof that the queen had always been innocent.

The corrupt royals were executed, and new rulers were chosen to lead the kingdom. From that day forward, the Kingdom of Inver became a safer and better place to live, while the misunderstood history of the Demon Queen transformed into one of the greatest stories ever told.
